These hitchhiking ghosts
used to haunt our Magic Kingdom Doom Buggies
and now they are relics of a time
when we valued magic tricks over technology.
Subtle over silly.
Seeing them now brings mixed emotions
remembering the first time they hitched a ride
when I gazed in wonder
at the character whom I hadn’t invited
but who had chosen me to follow home.

When change happens
often the fading pieces of our life
end up in a museum of our own making.
We could be sad
looking back on what was
wishing to go back to familiar ghosts
wanting to reinstall the figures
back into our seance conveyance
and carry them home once more.

But while we can long for apparitions
we can’t recreate what once was.
Can’t go back in time.
Can’t undo the change.
So instead we make our peace
with our lost ghosts
and thank them for their haunting
for all the times they chose to sit with us on the journey
even if ours is continuing without them
