When Disney unexpectedly reminds you of a piece of When Disney unexpectedly reminds you of a piece of yourself you’d almost forgotten 😭 Jollywood Nights was an incredible event, and I absolutely loved every minute. This year felt relaxed and peaceful, and it was wonderful to unplug from the modern world for a while and time-travel a bit. The ice skating show called Glisten featured some wonderful original music, there was more Miss Piggy and Kermit in the Disney Holidays in Holllywood show than ever before, and the NBC sing-along was masterfully staged and put together. As for the TipTop Club (named after the “club” of people over 6’5” in Imagineering back in the day), I still can’t believe they played It’s a Good Day. The Peggy Lee version of that song is my go-to pick me up to start my day. Seeing that guest smile as she got up out of her wheelchair and danced was absolutely heartwarming 🥺 And getting to dance myself was such a meaningful moment for me because I used to be in a pre-professional ballet program once upon a time. I felt like I’d found the lost part of myself who loves to dance, even for just a moment, in this little courtyard in Hollywood Studios under the stars ✨ And that, among a million other reasons, is why I love Disney so darn much. 🥹 (Ps if anyone knows the dancer featured in this, I’d love his name so I can give him a cast compliment. I can just imagine Marc looking at a concept & thi I can just imagine Marc looking at a concept & thinking, “Something is missing… maybe if I throw in a couple cats... ah yes, PERFECT.” (Or should it be purrrrfect 😂) Marc Davis was notorious for creating vast amounts of concept art pieces for attractions just to have options for what direction they would like to go (he did the same for characters when he worked as an animator). He knew they would not use every single concept that he sketched, but I sometimes wonder if he wished they would have included more of these cats, especially in the Haunted Mansion where a black cat crossing your path just makes a lot of sense. The Sinister 11 portraits hang in the Walt Disney World version of the Haunted Mansion, though not in the portrait gallery like they originally did (unless you’re in the Tokyo version). The opera glasses lady and the Witch of Walpurgis both have black cats in their portraits. I’m still holding out hope they’ll add that kitchen someday to the Haunted Mansion 🥺 I’m glad they give a nod to the one-eyed demon cat in the queue, but he’s not *quite* as sinister as X. I truly regretted that last one 🤢😂 When Dis I truly regretted that last one 🤢😂 When Disney was creating it’s Disneyland TV show to promote the park before it opened in the 1950s, they didn’t expect that Davy Crockett with Fess Parker would be so wildly popular. Raccoon skins were few and far between in those days (since traders had long since slowed the fur trade), so Disney found a whole bunch of coonskins that were in a warehouse owned by a company in China. Disney bought them wholesale and that’s how the coonskin cap came back into popularity in America. As for “you can’t top pigs with pigs,” that was Walt Disney‘s reaction to the idea of making sequel, referring to Three Little Pigs, which was fairly successful as a short film. What he meant was you had to innovate, grow, and try new things, not just do what you’ve always done, because an audience will never be as enamored with something as they were the first time. Many thanks to my friend and Distory p0dcast co-host @walruscarpclothing who very early on in my life as a creator told me to keep going because he knew I’d be great (and who has been encouraging me ever since). If it were up to Marc Davis, there would be a lot If it were up to Marc Davis, there would be a lot more cats in the Mansion 😂 as it is, we only have the one in the load area, which alludes to the abandoned one-eyed demon cat concept (well, and a couple in the graveyard as well, also courtesy of Marc). One elevation sketch did show a screeching cat weathervane though (kinda sad we don’t have that tbh). The Haunted Mansion went through so many changes in the decade of its development, but it’s hard to credit any one particular artist with these concepts. If you asked Marc Davis, he’d say that 85% of the ideas in the Mansion were his, but he used an awful lot of concepts and develoment work from Ken Anderson, Rolly Crump, Yale, Gracey, Claude Coats, and others. Like Leota, for example… she had variations created by Rolly Crump, Marc Davis (the Madame Z. concepts) Ken Anderson, and even Dorothea Redmond, all of which ended up in one way or another in the final version. There are endless ideas that came from the early walk-through concepts, but I just picked a few for lack of time. They don’t get to be your happy thought 🥺✨ They don’t get to be your happy thought 🥺✨ I think losing the character of Oswald was more emotionally complex for Walt than simply losing a character he’d developed. The artists that he trained up in his studio, the people he worked with and trusted, secretly signed on with Charles Mintz at Universal, leaving Walt with only one animator (Ub Iwerks) to help rebuild the studio. The betrayal and abandonment Walt must have felt in that season must have been overwhelming, but Mickey rose from the ashes of that horrible situation. When Walt wanted to build an amusement park near the Burbank studio, most people at the studio thought it was just a crazy dream. They didn’t see what he was really trying to do or accomplish. He spent a lot of time in the field pacing back-and-forth, envisioning where everything would be. Over time, others started to come alongside him, to see his vision and help bring it to fruition. One of Walt’s last dinners in Disneyland was spent with the people who helped build his park, the ones who had chosed to walk with him on the journey snd see what he saw. After the dinner, Walt thanked them and said, “I really enjoyed that. It was one of the nicest evenings I’ve ever spent.” When they suggested they should do it again soon, Walt said, “No, there won’t be any more. I won’t live forever... let’s just say this was a wonderful evening and I won’t forget it.” Walt passed away that same year. We only have so much time on this earth, and we get to choose who gets the honor of our presence. If someone doesn’t treat you with the kindness, love, and respect you deserve, then they aren’t worthy of your magic and joy. Go find people who will celebrate you and who choose to stay, even when your Magic Kingdoms still resemble orange groves. No doubt he’d been briefed about the risk of it tipping backwards, which Ed and Karl said could be prevented as long as the engineer was careful about the train’s momentum as it approached the hill. Believe it or not, the Casey Junior Circus train was supposed to be Disneyland original thrill ride. That’s why you see it have such a steep grade in that picture with Arrow development.  The “impossible hill” didn’t have a lift chain typical of most roller coasters. Instead, there were sprockets on the train that engaged a fixed chain. They eventually resolved the safety concern of the engine toppling backwards by adding extra wheeels that hooked under the track to prevent it from tipping.  On opening day of Disneyland, as Ed put it, “The guy with the bulgy eyes, Jerry Colonna, was supposed to drive the train, but he chickened out. So they put his clothes on Karl and Karl was the driver for opening day. Karl had a lot of guts. Jerry just chickened out. He looked at that hill and said ‘No.’” I respect that action Jerry took that day, though, to be honest. His ability to know his limitations and advocate for himself because he didn’t feel safe is something not all of us are able to do when faced with a high-pressure situation. I mean, who doesn’t want a copy of the Declarati I mean, who doesn’t want a copy of the Declaration of Independence as their Disneyland souvenir 😂 It makes sense though in the broader context of how Walt Disney wanted Disneyland to be a place where people would learn as well as play. That’s why so many rides were based on the True Life Adventures documentary films, like the Jungle Cruise and Mine Train Through Nature’s Wonderland. Re-creating this tour directly from the official 1962 script of the tour guides used to use in Disneyland was truly a joy to put together. That note on Tiana’s desk absolutely wrecked me That note on Tiana’s desk absolutely wrecked me 😭 it’s so easy when we’re working really hard at something to keep our head down for so long that we forget why we’re doing it. I love that beautiful reminder to stop and appreciate the view, even if you’re only halfway up the mountain 🥹 I also think it’s significant that the Disneyland and the Walt Disney World versions of Tiana’s Bayou Adventure differ in their placement of the “tree” Splash Mountain tribute. In WDW, its tucked into the background mid-ride. But in Disneyland, it’s very obviously the first thing you see in the dark section, completewith a little heart made from fireflies as a nod to this lost attraction. The reason for this could be one of a few things: 1. The Disneyland WDI team typically pays more attention to honoring the history of attractions because of DL being “Walt’s park” and/or some of the team being related to former Imagineers, 2. The Disneyland Splash Mountain was the original Splash (it opened first), or 3. WDI was sympathetic to guest’s reactions to missing Splash when the WDW Tiana’s opened and wanted to acknowledge people’s nostalgia of the orginal ride in a sweet, subtle way. (If that’s so, thanks to the Imagineering team for your thoughtfulness)💜 A few historical notes: The Firehouse Five plus Two Dixieland Jazzband was made up of several talented animators at Walt Disney Studios who also played instruments. I wish they would figure out a way to make that la I wish they would figure out a way to make that last effect work, it would be delightfully creepy to have them watch you 👀 The spirit cabinet in the seance circle was something invented by the Davenport brothers who started their act trying to prove ghosts were real in the 1850s. They were excellent escape artists and illusionists who used a “spirit cabinet” in their act. They would sit in the cabinet, all tied up, and after the lights went out objects would then begin to levitate seemingly of their own volition. Mediums soon saw the advantage of such a structure and started making their own “spirit cabinets,” but usually they were nothing more than a tent or booth set up in a corner. “Ghosts” (assistants dressed as apparitions) would then appear, often peeking out of the curtains at the audience. In early concept art by Ken Anderson for the Haubted Mansion, Madame Leota herself is depicted as a ghost emerging from a spirit cabinet. The spirit cabinet was kept in the mansion setup because it was planned to hold the projector for Leota’s face so that you would have seen her as you entered the seance circle. That plan was changed a few months before the Haunted Mansion opened, possibly because you’d have seen the projector as you circled around Leota. Definitely not something you’d see in the park t Definitely not something you’d see in the park today 😳 The bonekraft shop was integrated with the Davy Crockett Frontier Arcade, but it had its own window. It existed in that spot in Disneyland from 1956-1964, and it sold hand-carved bone souvenirs, including jewelry. Disneyland’s Indian Village was near and dear to Walt’s wife Lillian as she grew up on the Nez Perce Indian Reservation since her father was a blacksmith and federal marshall. For all of the native dance demonstrations, Disney stated they were “performed with the permission of the respective tribal councils and the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs”. The Native Americans employed at Disneyland were paid well at $35 per day, and all of the costumes and were authentically made (not created by Disneyland costume department as were most cast member costumes at the time). Note: Technically the circle of skulls in the final photo were in a different spot along the Rivers of America later than the earlier footage, but buffalo skulls were present in the older clips as well. The sign near the burial stated it represented the brave being a hunter. John Hench said the skeletons in Pirates of the Caribbean ruin the storyline because Walt Disney wanted there to be no pirates in the first few scenes. He wanted to look like the Pirates had just abruptly left, and then when you went into the town, you would discover them. But because they got such a good deal on real human skeletons from the UCLA medical lab, they started to put them everywhere, which changed the storyline from what Walt Disney had intended. He materialized on the right side of the attic in 1969 set in place for cast member previews a grand finale to an attic scene that slowly grew more grim as your doom buggy wove through a maze of discarded life debris & ghost skulls popping out of hatboxes to say hello. All of it held ominous foreshadowing accompanied by a steady heartbeat fluttering bats & strings of cobwebs that found your skin in the dark. Then you saw her a bride so frightening you turned to race to the window but before you made your escape there he was, on the right hand shaking on his cane face appearing then disappearing into his hatbox again & again except… it didn’t always disappear. Sometimes it remained light when it should have been dark or never illuminated at all showing his face when it should have been absent. It was a disappointment a failure of illusion so they pulled figure # 42 out of his place, & tried to fix him but no matter how they tried to make him what they wanted him to be they eventually surrendered hope gave up moved the bride to his former spot & # 42 became simply “omitted” on paper. Over time guests began to question their memory had he ever existed had they only made him up in their minds wanting him to be real stories and songs highlighted his presence and yet he was illusive a mistake that couldn’t be remedied except by time because one day the mold that had formed him was pulled out his head held in the hands of those who saw more than failure & they found a way forward giving the hatbox ghost a second chance to see and be seen. Definitely clipped along at a faster pace for Disn Definitely clipped along at a faster pace for Disneyland, which perhaps inspired the rapid pace of this comparison 😂 Note: I show the Disney World version first always in this and then Disneyland (in case there is any confusion!) I simply couldn’t include ALL the differences/similarities for lack of time, but there are quite a few. The queue also looks very different in Disneyland versus Disney World, including having only one crane in the load area for Disneyland versus two in Walt Disney World. The cranes are likely a nod to the Imagineer and set designer Pat Burke who created the original load area for Splash Mountain (that they replaced with this new theme). The 70th anniversary is just around the corner, ju The 70th anniversary is just around the corner, just sayin’… it would be amazing to see Disney bring back a few of the lost elements that used to make Disneyland so special 🥺 If you’re wondering why Pluto (and Mickey and Minnie) look so terrifying in the beginning of this, it’s because those costumes didn’t actually belong to Disney. The ice capades leased the rights to the characters and made costumes for them with transparent sections so that performers could see where they were going for safety. Since Disney did not have any costumes ready for opening day of Disneyland, they rented the costumes from the ice capades and used them as characters in the park. As soon as they had enough funds to make their own, they did, although they didn’t standardize them till the early 1960s. While some of these things are a sad loss to know that time has marched on and with it went some unique parts of the park, others probably disappeared for a reason as guest needs and culture shifted. While I love all of the vintage hats, I’m willing to admit that people in general wear less hats than they used to on a daily basis and so there would be less of a demand for them. Disney really didn’t start raising the price of Disney really didn’t start raising the price of tickets significantly (or regularly) until the Michael Eisner era in the 1980s. Before that time, they always tried to keep the base admission price relatively low. It still wasn’t a cheap place to visit, though, as the high quality theme park required more resources than the average amusement park. Even though Disney said the cost was an average of $2 per person, most guests spent an average of five dollars per person per day in 1955 (the equivalent of $57 today). If a family of four went on every ride in the park and had a meal the first month that Disneyland was open, the cost would’ve been about $32 (or $376 today) which is no small chunk of change. Most guests did not tour the park this way, though. It was more likely that they would go on a small handful of rides as a family, let the kids go on a ride or two, enjoy some of the free exhibits, have a meal and then go home (especiallu because the majority of guests were local and could come back another day). That’s what made the ticket books introduced in October of 1955 so appealing. Not only did people not feel like they were reaching in their pockets for money all day, but they also felt like they were getting a good deal for about the number of rides they would want to go on (8 rides, though many didn’t use all of the coupons in their ticket book). At the end of the day, Walt Disney knew he had to make money to keep afloat, but it wasn’t his main motivation. This explains so much about why we feel the way we This explains so much about why we feel the way we do walking down Main Street USA 🥹 None of these concepts are my own, they are all from Imagineer John Hench as described in an article in New West magazine in 1978. Hench thought deeply about the psychological meaning of Disneyland and how it impacts guests in meaningful ways. “Main Street, of course, has the Victorian feeling, which is probably one of the great optimistic periods of the world, where we thought progress was great and we all knew where we were going. This form reflects that prosperity, that enthusiasm. Walt wanted to reassure people. There’s some nostalgia involved, of course, but nostalgia for what? There was never a main street like this one. But it reminds you of some things about yourself that you’ve forgotten about.” - John Hench When you put Main Street in the context of how it was people of Walt’s generation who designed it, the street was nostalgic for them, even if their hometowns were not picture-perfect like this one. Most remembered what life was like at the turn of the century, before there were great depressions and WWI & II. That generation lost a lot of their childhood, optimism, and sense of safety because of their life circumstances. Main Street was a place that brought them back to themselves, to a time when the world wasn’t so overwhelming. I think that Main Street still plays this role in our lives today. While none of us were alive to see the turn of the century, that sense of prosperity, optimism, and peace still resonates with us and brings us back to a time when we felt safe and whole. Perhaps I was too subtle 🤔 Disney, I beg you PL Perhaps I was too subtle 🤔 Disney, I beg you PLEASE bring this back to World Showcase in Epcot 😭😭 As much as I would like to see the omnibusses return, sadly some of them have been sold to other places and some have been shipped to other parks. Perhaps the Imagineers could come up with some new ride vehicles that represent some of the countries that would provide transportation around World Showcase. Because as much as I love strolling (and eating) around the world, Epcot is brutally large, especially on hot summer days ☀️ 😭 A few of the vehicles in the fleet of omnibusses you see here were created specifically for Epcot in 1982 based off of Bob Geers original 1956 design for the omnibus in Disneyland, while two were imported from Disneyland. Its unclear exactly when the busses stopped operating (it seems like they phased them out over time) but past the 90s they only seem to be used in Epcot for character calvacades and not guest transportation. His foreman said it would be cheaper without the curve, but Walt responded with “it’d be cheaper not to do this at all.” The miniature horse corral only lasted until 1957 because of its low capacity… they could only let a few guests into the corral at a time to prevent the animals from getting overstimulated. That location then turned into the Frontierland 🔫 gallery. A bit of honesty for world mental health day 🥺 A bit of honesty for world mental health day 🥺 Don’t get me wrong, I am incredibly grateful for this life I get to live, a dream that has come true for me in ways I never thought possible. But that doesn’t mean I don’t have days (or seasons) of struggle. Disney has always been a way for me to process through what I’m going through, a language that gives words to feelings that I often can’t identify any other way. This month, I’m working on prioritizing my peace, my own mental health, as I often get so caught up in trying to love others that I forget that I’m also deserving of that love. Thank you for allowing me a space to not only tell unique stories about Disney history but for also cheering me on as a human who is in process, as so many of you do in the comments I receive every day 🥹 Thank you also to my husband who has made me feel easy to love for the past 20 years, every single day. ❤️ If you’re someone who is struggling to put one foot in front of the other or who feels they have to be strong when they are falling apart on the inside, remember that feelings come and go, and this season will eventually change. The Frontierland one is a bit of a head-scratcher, The Frontierland one is a bit of a head-scratcher, I’ll admit 😂 This psychological interpretation of Disneyland came from Imagineer and Disney Legend John Hench in a 1978 article in New West magazine. In explanation of Frontierland, John said, “Nobody worries about the past, and in a sense nobody worries about the future because that’s going to be up in space, in the space colonies. It’s today where you have the problem.” (I think he had a tremendous amount of faith in the space program at the time, which makes sense for the person who designed Space Mountain). To clarify about New Orleans Square smelling better than the actual New Orleans, John Hench claimed it had a bad smell because of the heavy humidity that’s often found there 🙈 I love the way he thought about Disneyland in a deep way, perhaps sometimes deeper than Walt Disney did himself. Its always been my opinion that Walt had incredible instincts for design that subconsciously created these emotional outlets for guests without him even fully realizing what he was doing. But certainly the Imagineers that Walt set in place to create the atmosphere of Disneyland thought about such things, including John Hench. I get to embody the free fall of the Hollywood Tower Hotel or the recklessness of the wildest ride I can wish the heads off of those who hurt me or shape-shift at will into someone who holds their head a little higher I can see more than just myself when I look in the mirror dressed in magic adorned in the stories that have brought me peace when I didn’t feel peaceful.
